Review: ELYSIUM

Science-fiction fans always have new titles on the big screen to love... or hate. The new option is the film 'ELYSIUM'.

By Staff
From director Neill Blomkamp (you may remember his previous film 'District 9') ELYSIUM shows a world completely divided. Or maybe we should say two worlds. The lower classes live on Earth; people that have to struggle day in and day out to lead a dignified life or simply make ends meet, especially when they have to deal with barely the minimum as far as health and wellbeing is concerned. Up above, literally in space, is where the rich live, the ones that had the money to purchase a luxury home in a new place called "Elysium" and live carefree; including being able to push a button and get rid of any disease and/or health concern.

When 'Max', played by Matt Damon, has an accident and his life is in jeopardy, he puts all fear aside and makes his mind up to do everything in his power to go to the place he and everyone he loves have been barred from.

This is where the fun begins. Max obtains information that could stop all of Earth's habitants misery and, at the same time, try and save his life. To get onboard the ship that will take him to face his destiny, he must first face 'Kruger', played by Sharlto Copley, a mercenary following orders from 'Delacourt', played by Jodie Foster, the top-security chief in Elysium.

The story isn't something precisely new, we've seen something like it before, but the special effects and the art direction provide for something truly remarkable to watch. Though we should mention, for those of you who demand more of every film, these aspects might not be enough.

The film is entertaining and with some great action sequences. If you keep your expectations just a bit on the low side, we think you may be able to have some fun.

6.5/10 Worth the Ticket Prize.
