The 'enjoy in on your couch' review of the week is dedicated
to a great actor who passed away on June 19th- James Gandolfini. Join us as we
share our thoughts on 'CRIMSON TIDE'.
Tony Scott, who died of an apparent suicide last year,
directed this 1995 film.
Denzel Washington and Gene Hackman play the main characters
'Commander Ron Hunter' and 'Captain Frank Ramsey' respectively.
The film tells us about the submarine U.S.S. Alabama of the
U.S. Marine. The mission for to the Captain and his crew is to approach Russian
territory and, if the situation requires it, attack the army led by Vladimir
Radchenko, who has put an offensive together against the country's government,
with Weapons of Mass Destruction.
The story has a very peculiar depth to it. The real conflict
is not on the main land, but inside the submarine when the X.O. (Second in
command) does not concur with the Captain about an order received from the U.S.
government. This leads to a revolution inside the ship where choosing the wrong
side may result in the death of every crewmember and maybe, even start an international
war.
Joining the main players is an endless list of actors who
were just starting to show signs of greater things to come. Amongst them are
the before mentioned James Gandolfini, Viggo Mortensen (Lord of the Rings),
Danny Nucci (Titanic), Steve Zahn (Joy Ride) and others.
Our thoughts:
The film is loaded with tension and claustrophobia. Action
is present at all times and the performances by the leads are simple
impressive. The narrative, as our good friend Perro Eduar-dog would say, is a
jewel. The cinematography is well done and the art direction does an excellent
job at reminding the audience at all times that they are watching events inside
a submarine.
If you haven't seen this film we highly recommend you take
the time to find it. You won't regret it.
9.6 WOW Can't miss this movie.
* R.I.P. James Gandolfini (1961-2013).
