Review: AFTER EARTH

Will Smith is a force to be reckoned with at the movies, especially during the summer. He teamed-up with his son Jaden and 'The sixth sense's director, M. Night Shyamalan, to bring this story to life. This is our review of 'AFTER EARTH'.

The former "Fresh prince" has gone from actor/comedian to blockbuster icon, to producer, to writer. With a career that is now close to a quarter of a century, we have to wonder what was going through his mind when he signed Shyamalan (as close to a one-hit-wonder as one can get) as the man to bring his vision (he wrote the story the film is based on) to the big screen? We just can't come up with a reason that satisfies us.

While the main plot for this film is actually quite interesting, the final product is NOT.
The story goes about life after Planet Earth for humankind who now live in a planet they thought safe to migrate to. Aliens, however, declare war on us and create (yes, create) blind monsters that find and kill humans by smelling the pheromones they create when they are afraid.
While on a military mission to another planet, 'Captain Cypher Raige', played by Will Smith, and his crew as well as his son 'Kitai', played by his real life son Jaden Smith, crash on Planet Earth. By this point, all life on the planet has evolved to kill humans, so danger is at every corner. To make things worse, the Captain suffers a terrible injury and is up to his son to find help.

Our thoughts:
In regards to special effects, we don't know what production company was in charge of creating them, but they did a mediocre job. The animals we see living on Earth don't look real at all and they lacked imagination.
The cinematography is TERRIBLE. The lighting department had no idea where to place lights on the green-screen set and that makes the characters look like they are just floating around.
The editing is simply boring.
The art direction department was either left with the lowest budget on film history or they just phoned this job in.
Shyamalan's direction is emotionless. There is no attachment to the characters and everything going on is predictable.
Worst of all, the "danger" Planet Earth promises is a lie. There are moments of danger but the real threat is an alien monster the Captain and his crew brought to Earth on their ship.

We give up. We gave this director one last chance and he made us wish we had watched OBLIVION a second time.

* No more 'SKIP IT', we take this opportunity to inaugurate the title that will take its place from now on *

3/10 Walk Away!
