Review: NOW YOU SEE ME

First they amaze you, then they surprise you and finally they charm you. This is our review of 'NOW YOU SEE ME'.

By Edgar Perez
One of MARVEL's most underrated films is Louis Leterrier's 'The Incredible HULK'. He is back on the director's chair to bring us this film about a group of four illusionists that seem to be the best in the world.
Their charm is unbelievable; they trap you with their various personalities and styles.

The story begins as they each receive a tarot card with instructions to be at a specific place and time. When they arrive they realize they are being recruited to set up a show. When we see them again it’s been a year and they are now in Las Vegas performing the show. With magic tricks never before seen, they manage to transport a man to Paris to rob a bank. At first it’s believed that it is all an illusion but the following day FBI agents arrest them because the bank they supposedly robbed has in fact been robbed.
Now it is a matter of time to prove the members of this group are criminal pros before it is too late.

Analysis and opinion:
This type of films isn't new. Back in 2006 Christopher Nolan gave us a great example of this genre with his film 'The Prestige'. This time Leterrier does everything he can to create a group of magicians for the audience to connect with and even cheer for against the FBI. The characterizations by the main players were great; especially Jesse Eisenberg's who is a sarcasm and manipulation ace.
The biggest problem the film runs into is its screenplay. Let me tell you beforehand that it is very well structured, but it has a horrible flaw- arrogance. The film reminds the audience at every turn that no matter how hard they try to figure out the magicians' next move, they won't be able to. If you are able to do it or not is irrelevant, what matters is how the creators forgot about writing a better and more interesting story instead of shoving their "surprising ending" down the audience's throat.

Bottom-line is this movie is good but not great, which is too bad because it certainly had the potential and the right pieces in the right place to be so.

7/10 Worth the Ticket Price.
