Review: THE CONJURING

The most talked about film in recent weeks isn't based on a comic book or a worldwide famous series of books. It is a suspense and horror film. Here is our review of 'THE CONJURING'.

By Edgar Perez
Last year we recommended you watch 'The cabin in the woods'; a film that used its disadvantages as strengths. James Wan, director of 'Saw', brings us his most recent material with a movie that doesn't promise you you'll jump out of your seat, but instead tell you a story so unbelievable it can only be true.

The Warren's are a couple who investigate paranormal activity and work with the support of the Vatican on special cases. The one presented to us is, according to information provided at the beginning of the film, the most macabre in their long history.
A couple and their 5 daughters have just moved into their new home somewhere in Rhode Island. Unfortunately, there seems to be something terribly wrong related to the home's previous owners. The little girls are being frightened every night by supernatural beings and they are manifesting physically. The Warrens are called in to help the family and as they arrive they immediately sense a dark and evil presence that will test them like nothing ever before.

Analysis:
The narrative is a bit slow at first; as a matter of fact the second act starts after the second half of the film (the action sequences and the main plot in the story). Generally this would seem as a flaw in the horror genre but Wan takes his time getting all the stories straight as he builds tension in every scene. At no point does the film feel too much or uninteresting.

The cheap jolts and jumps usually caused by ghosts and loud screams, that are supposed to shock the audience but don't, are brilliantly substituted with amazing sequences, filled with tension and almost artistic ambiance.

This movie is being called the best of the year in its genre. There are a few months left in the year and there may be a couple of films that will best it but we are sure that this one will be the best at a couple of things- create high quality fear and suspense for a good 90 minutes.

9/10 Good Popcorn Fun.
