We are a couple of days away from Super Bowl XLVIII and we
want to take this chance to bring you a special treat; this is our review of
'REMEMBER THE TITANS'.
By Edgar Perez, Chief Editor
This picture tells us the true story of Virginia's T.C.
Williams' high school football team, which, back in 1971, was forced to
integrate both African American and white students in it's classrooms; something
that back then was almost an insult to even say.
Coach Herman Boone, played by Denzel Washington, has to find
a way for the students to stop hating each other in order to form a team, which
cannot be achieved until they all trust each other.
To make matters worse, the habitants of the town don't like
the idea of having an African American coach, their children going to school
with students from a different race and much less that they get ideas in their
heads about possible interracial friendships.
Analysis and opinion:
I first saw this movie back in 2004 after my good friend Rob
Bridges recommended it to me saying it was an inspiring story full of heart. He
was absolutely right.
The narrative is full of interesting details and memorable
moments.
As it happens with all stories based on actual events, the
Hollywood "touch" is in some of the sequences and things going on but
it never goes too far nor shows an impossible scenario that feels exaggerated
for dramatization purposes.
Denzel's interpretation, as well as the many young faces
playing the students, are top-notch; the variety of character helps the
audience understand how integration was seen during those times.
Last but not least, if you are not a fan of sports movies,
football ones in particular, don't worry, the filmmakers focused on the story
and the people more than anything else.
This is a film deffinetly worth watching during SUPER BOWL
week to get your football spirit going.
9.5/10 GOOD POPCORN FUN!
