Couch Review: CRONOS

Here's the thing- Kevin Smith's 'Jersey Stories', for reasons we can't conceive, are not very popular in Mexico (or around the world maybe, who knows?), so for this week's 'enjoy it on the comfort of your couch' review, we did CHASING AMY. Its not fair for you guys to read something most of you have already seen, so instead, we'll give you a bit of history on Guillermo del Toro's critically acclaimed CRONOS. Hopefully, you'll find it interesting and go rent the flick.

Lets turn the clock back to 1993. Mexico's film industry was just starting to get good again. We've had a good run with old style movies and mature themed stories, but no matter what, it seemed we couldn't produce a film worthy of international recognition.
Enter Guillermo del Toro.

This TV-director was making waves on the show "La telaraña", the spider-web. Something along the lines of the recent 'An American Horror Story'. Anyway, to not make this too long- he wrote a screenplay for a feature-length horror film.
The first thing everyone thought was- another horror film with crappy makeup and laughable dialogue, big deal!

After getting funds to produce his film, he took it to Cannes Film Festival. JACKPOT!
Immediate international recognition. All of the sudden people are lining up to get tickets for the premiere of the most anticipated Mexican film in decades.

It was not a disappointment at all.

The story follows 'Jesus Gris', an old man who owns an antique store and who takes care of his granddaughter 'Aurora', an almost autistic little girl.
One day a man comes into the store looking for an Archangel sculpture. He asks no questions, doesn't complain about the price and just purchases it.
Little he knows earlier that same day, Jesus and Aurora had a mishap with that same exact sculpture and removed an item hidden inside it.

The following day they go back into the store and find it trashed. They receive a threatening message saying they want the item inside the sculpture or else.

It doesn't sound like much, but believe us when we say we keep the important parts of the story out so we don't spoil the film for you. Just remember this- CRONOS was Guillermo del Toro's first film and he just did PACIFIC RIM with over $200 MUSD. They don't just hand out that kind of money to a guy with no talent (Except M. Knight Shyamalan, they give that guy anything for some strange reason).

This is a fantastic movie to watch so go and find it somewhere; you won't regret it.

A perfect 10. WOW Can't Miss This Movie.
