Review: Life of Pi

'LIFE OF PI'... Director Ang Lee (Brokeback mountain, Hulk) bring us one more of the so-called "Impossible to make a movie adaptation" novels (others are 'WATCHMEN', 'COSMOPOLIS', 'LOLITA'). Maybe he and the rest of the creators should have waited for a different adaptation. Let me explain why.

*WARNING- I will mention a couple of 'spoilers' but I'll try not to make them too obvious or focus on them more than I need to.

The movie begins with some beautiful scenes, where we see animals of all sizes and colors. The song playing in the background is perfect for it. But, the sequence keeps going and going until you realize you are ready for it to be over.
When we finally get into the story, the first thing we hear about is a weirdly built uncle. When you see this uncle, you'll immediately recall films like 'FORREST GUMP' and 'BIG FISH' and think- Awesome!
Unfortunately there are not enough of the details that make this type of films interesting, making the movie's first hour go by slower than one would hope. Lets face it, we all saw a tiger on the movie-poster and that is what we want to see on screen.
Putting these narrative issues aside, which by the way are in fact important for the rest of the movie, we understand that the director is preparing us for something unlike anything we've seen before.
When that moment of the film arrives, HANG ON TO YOUR SEATS! There's a little over 45 minutes of INTENSE action sequences FILLED with emotion and danger- they are really extraordinary.
However, once again the movie turns repetitive and long.
Just as you think the story is going to get interesting again, it comes to an abrupt and disappointing end.
The photography, which is one of aspects the movie is using more for its marketing campaign, is amazing: Incredible and very pleasing to the eye. Although, I don't recommend you watch it on 3D, you are better off saving the extra money. See it the old-fashion way and you'll appreciate the visuals better.
In short- The amount/variety of animals promised at the beginning, I want to think, died in the editing room.
The details that make these movies different were forgotten or ignored.
'LIFE OF PI' promised to be incredible, and even though some sequences were, most of it was definitely not.
7/10 Worth the Ticket Price (regular price, not 3D price)
