Review: MAN OF STEEL

The superhero of superheroes has his much-awaited return to the big screen with the film "MAN OF STEEL".

We are going to do this review a little different since almost everybody knows Superman's, Lois Lane's, Jor-El's and Planet Kripton's story. We'll focus on other aspects of the movie instead.

Christopher Nolan, director of the "Dark Knight Trilogy", lead the way as Chief Producer of this film. The main idea was to take Superman's (get used to reading 'Superman' a lot throughout this review) adventures in Metropolis and adapt them to a more realistic world (just like it was done for Batman).
Excellent idea- it offers fans of the man of steel a movie they can talk about with Batman fans (so far Superman fans just have to sit there and hear Bat-geeks brag about their most recent trilogy).
The director chosen for this task was Zack Snyder, who gave us "Watchmen", "Sucker Punch", "300" and some other movies. Notice a trend? All fantasy. Comic book related, yes, but fantasy nonetheless. Big. Fat. Mistake.

"MAN OF STEEL" has no soul. It is an endless set of sequences after sequences that don't let the audience fully understand or even get excited about what they are watching. And worse even is the fact that the characters don't show any emotion about the situations they are living.

There were some good changes some that were a little daring, and some others that are almost unforgiveable for any fan of the comic book. We won't give any examples here, but if anybody wants one, just leave us a comment on the facebook post about this review and we'll gladly give it to you.

The cast has its hits and misses. Henry Cavill did a pretty good job with the material he was given for his interpretation of 'Clark Kent' and 'Superman'.
Amy Adams, we love her but, she was nothing like the 'Lois Lane' we've grown to love; all her idiosyncrasies and her "charm" (for lack of a better word) are missing.
Michael Shannon as 'General Zod' had some iffy moments but did a pretty good job for the most part. We'll leave the rest of the cast out because we don't want to extend this any more than we have to.

The special effects aren't that bad, but they offer nothing new and on the action sequences they were overused in an extensive way; so much so that instead of helping the sequences, they make them look a bit ridiculous.

Last, but not least, the screenplay. What a disappointment... As we mentioned earlier, the narrative is awful, and the script doesn't help much either. The film is built with a lot of sequences with wide-ranging dialogue, but very little of it is actually important or interesting.

Lets hope that Christopher Nolan is well rested from doing superhero movies and takes the helm of the inevitably upcoming sequel. While he's at it, he can hire his brother Jonathan to do the screenplay because David S. Goyer couldn't deliver a good one for this flick.

We thought we'd never say this but "Superman Returns" doesn't seem so bad anymore. DC Pictures has a lot of work to do if they want to launch their "Justice League" movie.
