Its interesting how even big stars like Halle Berry don't
have the luxury of premiering their films, regardless of the genre or budget,
on International markets a week or two after their U.S. debut. This is our
review of "THE CALL".
Halle Berry hasn't been keeping too busy lately; she is
saving herself for main rolls, and in this film she is just that playing
'Jordan', a 911 operator who is smart, kind and capable at her job.
It all changes when she receives a call from a young girl
called 'Leah' who is home alone and a stranger is trying to break into her
house. The situation ends in such a terrible way that 'Jordan' decides to
become an operator-trainer instead of being one. The plot thickens when an
unknown man kidnaps ‘Casey’, played by Abigail Breslin, and unexpected
circumstances lead to 'Jordan' being in charge of the emergency call.
The movie has a tone similar to the film 'SPEED'- fast, full
of emotions and tension.
The narrative during the first 60 minutes is awesome. The
Hollywood touch is there but the director pumps his film with so much adrenaline
that there is no time to nit-pick things here nor there.
The performances by Berry, Breslin and Michael Eklund, in
the roll of the kidnapper, are very good and they bring all the necessary
emotion to portray the desperation and anxiety in each of their characters.
Unfortunately, the last few minutes (and sorry if this is a
huge spoiler) are so disappointing that even after you have left the theater
hours earlier, the movie still feels like it failed in the end.
Having said this, we recommend you go look for it at the $1 USD
theaters or get it from the video rental company of your choice.
