Review: X-MEN DAYS OF FUTURE PAST

Two time-lines collide to prevent a dark future full with death all around. This is our review of 'X-MEN DAYS OF FUTURE PAST'.

By Denisse Ayala & Edgar Perez
It's no secret we are fans of the comic. Neither is it a secret that we judge films for what they are and understand that making them just like their original material is nearly impossible. This is why we love movies like last year's 'The hunger games: catching fire'. Other flicks, based on novels, comic books, TV series, etc., unless they are nothing like or deny their origins, we grade them for what they are and not for what they could've been.

Now that we have explained this, Bryan Singer's new film is a cinematic success like very few others.
If it diverges from it's original material (mainly with Kitty Pryde not traveling back in time, but Wolverine doing it), it is understandable and well explained why.

Now, lets get on with it.
The story tells us about the future where both mutants and humans alike fight against a common enemy- Trask Industries' Sentinels.
There're very few mutants left and they survive or escape imprisonment thanks to Kitty Pryde's mutant power, which is to be able to send Bishop's conscience back into himself a few days earlier and warn them about the upcoming attack.
This gives Professor X and Magneto an idea: Use the same technique to prevent things from happening in the past that will lead to his apocalyptic reality and achieve a peaceful future.
The problem is that the "journey" would destroy the subject's mind and it would be impossible to survive. That is until Wolverine, whose mutant powers of regeneration make him immune, volunteers for the mission.
The future, the past and everyone's life depends on Wolverine's ability to convince Xavier, who does not have his powers at the time, and Magneto who... well, isn't exactly available, that the future depends on them acting together and fighting for a common goal.
The rest of the story we'll leave it up to you to discover as you watch the flick.

Analysis and opinion:
The plot is somewhat complex- time travel with simultaneous timelines and developments that alter them at every turn. The good thing is, the screenplay is gorgeous!
Bryan Singer took his time to develop a story that was entertaining, interesting and with enough action sequences to keep the audience's attention.
An example of this is the first important sequence, which happens within minutes of the start of the movie; a battle between mutants and Sentinels filled with action and excitement. Then, without getting into plot issues that we all knew were going to be resolved eventually, he goes into the main plot without unnecessary twists. E.g.- Wolverine accepts his mission without making a big deal out of it. Other movies would've wasted valuable minutes trying to dramatize the film more than needed.

Speaking about sequences and time well spent, the narrative is top-notch.
The editing and the plot develop in a great manner building tension and emotion without leaving an important aspect of the films in the genre out- the action and battle sequences. Even though there are only a few, they are entertaining and fulfill the expectation in the audience.

The performances for Xavier, Magneto, both young and adult, are amazing. Singer keeps the bar set by Matthew Vaughn in 'First Class' where we saw the X-Men beginnings and Xavier and Magneto's friendship develop. A special mention to Peter Dinklage's interpretation of 'Dr. Bolivar Traks' who stole every sequence he was in.

*As a more personal note, it is great to see that this amazing actor is getting the recognition he deserves; before he was in 'Game of Thrones' he had already done great roles and almost nobody paid any attention to him.*

The special effects were nothing special, no pun intended; they offered some interesting things but nothing we hadn't seen before, though we'd like to mention that 'Blink's power looked just like we hoped it did- EXTRAORDINARY.

Last but not least, Bryan Singer's direction was missing in 'X-Men The Last Stand' but now he asserts himself as THE choice to make this saga great once again.

In our humble opinion, this is the best entry in the saga and was VERY close to perfection. See it in 3D, it's worth it!
9.7/10 WOW, CAN'T MISS THIS MOVIE!
