The long awaited prequel to 'The Lord of
the Rings' finally hit theaters this weekend and does it in the
every-one-loves-to-hate 3D format.
'The Hobbit- An unexpected journey' is just
what Tolkien fans wanted to see- Funny characters, unbelievable landscapes and
settings, magic and fantasy. Unfortunately it is also everything that us
not-so-big fans feared it would be- Lots of shots of people walking,
exaggerated dialogue, too much preparation for the final two films and
sequences that feel stretched to the limit.
Most of the main characters are all new to
the series (almost all are 'Dwarfs') but luckily 'Gandalf the Grey' is a key player
for most of the movie and this eases the understanding of everything because
otherwise it would have been a brand new Middle-Earth and that just sounds
painful to sit through.
The duration of the film is exhausting;
you'll probably walk out of the theater with a sore rear-end. For most
sequences where stuff is happening, ironically, nothing is actually happening.
The final few minutes (the final battles to be more precise) are very exciting
and quite beautiful to watch but are not enough to justify 3 long hours of
film. Lets hope the following movies contain a lot more entertaining material.
I know most of you will not do as I say
but- this movie is not worth the admission price. Wait for the DVD and watch it
in the comfort of your home- 5/10 Rental or Discount Theater.
