Review: ALEX CROSS / ALONG CAME A SPIDER

'Harry Potter' fans, 'Narnia' fans, 'Eragon' fans, we feel your pain. This is our review of "ALEX CROSS".

A few years ago, we at EdP-Review read an article that was based on a recent football team's pitiful performance. The writer talked about basketball instead of the recent debacle of the football program (so you get a better idea, it was based on teams from the University of Kentucky). Why did he do it that way? He said it was because "If you have nothing good to say, then don't say anything at all". We are pretty sure he wasn't the first writer to do it. And now, we will make sure he is not the last.

"ALEX CROSS" is a movie loosely based on a couple of James Patterson books.

1/10 Skip This Movie. (Please continue reading after our 'SKIP IT' sign)

This is our 'Enjoy it on the comfort of your couch' review of the week.

In 1997 James Patterson's character 'FBI Detective Alex Cross', had his first film adaptation when "KISS THE GIRLS" hit theaters. It wasn't a huge success, but it did make more money than expected plus, Morgan Freeman's interpretation of Alex Cross was excellent. That is all Hollywood needed to know to make another movie based on the character. Enter "ALONG CAME A SPIDER".

Lee Tamahori, the director behind "007: DIE ANOTHER DAY", took the reins of this prequel to "KtG" and turned it into another hit.

The story alone is quite interesting and involves you more and more as it develops. It begins as Detective Cross is on a leave of absence from the Bureau after a terrible accident takes the life of his partner 'Tracie'. A few months later he is forced back into work after a kidnapper, who calls himself 'Gary Sonjei', tracks him down and asks him to be the Detective in charge of the investigation of his most recent criminal plan (sounds weird, but we don't know how else to describe it, sorry).

The performances by Morgan Freeman and Monica Potter (in the role of 'Jezzie Flannigan') are incredible. The mischievous Michael Wincott (The Crow, Alien Resurrection) is very charismatic as the evil mastermind 'Sonjei'.

The narrative is the movie's best quality; it does everything it needs to keep the story flowing without giving too much away.

This is a very interesting movie to watch, especially because it takes place right at the beginning of Alex Cross' adventures.

9/10 Good Popcorn Fun.
As a side note- if you like the movie, go ahead and watch "KISS THE GIRLS" too. Though a little warning: you might find yourself wanting to read all the other 'Alex Cross' novels (and in our opinion that's something worth doing with your time).
